SUMMARY:22/07/21 – Skills4Scientists: Intro to Python 2
DESCRIPTION:Eventbrite Link: s4s-python2-220721.eventbrite.co.uk \nDescription:\nThis event is part of the virtual Skills 4 Scientists series run by the Artificial Intelligence for Scientific Discovery Network+ (AI3SD) and the Physical Sciences Data-Science Service (PSDS). \nThis session will be a follow on from our Intro to Python 1 course\, with a focus on working further with the core elements of Python and performing data analysis\, using Jupyter notebooks and Anaconda. This course is designed to allow you to follow along with the content and examples as the course goes\, but you will also be provided with course material to allow you to cover it again after the live event. \nWho is this event for?\nThis series of virtual events is primarily aimed at late stage undergraduate or early stage postgraduate students who are studying a physical sciences subject. However\, it is open to any attendees who wish to join if the subject matter is of interest to you! Please note though that many of the examples will be based around chemistry / physical sciences subject matter. \nPre-requisites:\nThis course expects attendees to install Python3 and Jupyter Notebooks through Anaconda (https://www.anaconda.com/) before the course. As this is the platform we will be using. \nOur pre-requisites document can be downloaded from: https://www.ai3sd.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/374/2021/07/Installation_Instructions.pdf\n\nIt is beneficial if you have a very basic understanding of python (or another coding language) but we are not expecting you to be experienced with coding. We advise that you either attend our Python 1 course or view the recording prior to this event. \nAgenda:  \n\n2:00-2:15: Registration & Logistics\n2:15-2:30: How to write good code\n2:30-3:25: Typing\, Variables\, Data Types\, Functions\n3:25-3:45: Break\n3:45-4:45: Data Analysis Case Study\n4:45-5:00: Wrap Up\n\nSpeaker Bio: \n\nSamuel Munday is a Research Assistant at the University of Southampton. He is currently part of the ICURe programme\, and his research focus is in the digital economy space\, interviewing and working with industry to assess the need for systems that can automatically curate and contextualise information from paper records. Samuel graduated from the University of Southampton in 2018 with an MChem in Chemistry and Maths\, and prior to undertaking his recent position\, he worked as a Research Technician at the University\, and was involved with a variety of different projects. He led the development and implementation of a machine learning platform for the polymeric materials sector\, aiding them in bringing new products to market faster. He has also developed and helped deliver a Python programming course for undergraduate Chemists as well as being involved in assessing the ethical implications of implementing AI and data sharing across the food supply chain.\n\n
